NZ adventures, here we come
New Zealand is a 3.5 hour flight from Eastern Australia and around a 15 hour flight from most places on the Pacific Rim, such as Singapore, Hong Kong or Tokyo.
Christchurch (CHC) is around an hours flight from Queenstown(ZQN), Wellington (WLG) and roughly 1.5 hours to Auckland (AKL).
Christchurch central has many one way streets as it is designed to be friendly for walkers and cyclists. We suggest parking your car on the outskirts and using the bus for a look around the city centre.
New Zealand has a quality roading network for getting around the country, but travel times can be slower than driving around Europe. There is no hurry, take your time.
So much to do in NZ
The Canterbury region is renown as an adventure playground, so try some backcountry hiking, dabble in some kayaking, hire some bikes and get out mountain biking, and lots more. Work up a thirst to visit Marlborough’s and North Canterbury’s vineyards and search out some of the breweries to visit, most serve fab food. Determine what you will want to do in NZ around Oceania orienteering and make a plan. With the Akaroa Peninsula in the south and the Alps to the north there is lost to explore. Find more information on your type of activities here.
Accommodation & camping
Take your time to find great deals on travel and hotel arrangements, here are some quick links to help you narrow your choices based on your budget.
There are plenty of options from hotels, and motels. But often with orienteering in remote places, hiring local houses can give you more flexibility if you want to self cater and stay in smaller out-of-the-way locations. To look for private holiday rental places try: Air B&B, Beachhouses, Book a bach, Bachcare, and for a friendly host try Homestay and
if you are hiring a camper van the New Zealand Camping Guide is useful, or go wild and visit more remote with campsites organised by DOC (Department of Conservation). Be wary that DOC campsites often have basic toilet facilities with unflushable toilets and a tap for water. Some campsites that maybe useful and nearer to the events are: Whatamango Bay (a bit of a drive from Picton) , Marfells Beach (near Ward) and Godley Head (campsite on the hills above Christchurch) and Glencoe (further south than Oamaru).
Also as it is a busy time of the year in January some places may need to be booked several months in advance.
